Disney’s modern adaptation of Madeline L’Engle’s A Wrinkle In Time brings wonder, adventure, love, and comedy to an audience of all sorts. Director Ava Duvernay  created scenes of vibrant color, magical creatures, and beautiful costumes for the big screen in a fantasy movie, but not the plot.

Outcasted middle school student, Meg Murry, struggles with the four-year anniversary of the disappearance of her physicist father, Mr. Murry, who abruptly went missing, changing the family’s relationship and Meg’s personality. Meg’s younger brother, Charles Wallace, stays right by her side through the obstacles she faces, along with Calvin, a classmate who finds his way into the family’s adventure. Meg, Calvin, and Charles Wallace are introduced to Mrs. Which, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Whatsit, who guide the three children to search for the missing Mr. Murry. They are taken on an adventure into a different world with magical creatures, but face evil and and have to make critical decisions to save the ones they love.

The movie was very entertaining and fun to watch, but had many plot holes. The bright, colorful scenes draw you into the screen and create your very own adventure, right in your seat. Duvernay used very vibrant and action-packed scenes to entertain the audience, but stray away from the actual plot of the movie. Viewers who are already familiar with the novel may find themselves wanting more.

Each of the characters seemed to find themselves and change the way they felt about themselves throughout the movie. Meg’s character developed from a rebellious, self-loathing teen, to a kind and brave girl. But the movie jumped from scenes and setting so fast, plot holes and little emotional connections were left behind. There were often times when characters appeared or an event would happen with no explanation. The action in those scenes, however, was wildly entertaining and kept you ready for the next action packed scene. There were few times when a scene was unexciting, but when there was, a little comedy would always fill the gap.

This modern depiction of L’Engle’s classic tale features famous actors, Mindy Kahling, Opera Winfrey, Chris Pine, and Reese Witherspoon, all on one screen. The lead roles of females and minorities also added a unique factor to the movie and its modernism.

Although the movie has wildly vivid and vibrant scenes, the visual and musical strength drowns out the actual plot and dialogue of the movie. A Wrinkle In Time can entertain a young audience looking for beautiful images and magical creatures, and is surely fun to watch, but doesn’t tell the story or develop the plot very well, and has the audience novel guessing for an explanation.
