Your Saturday Morning Fix

Kaylin Carpenter| LIFESTYLES

Lately at La Cueva, hiking seems to be everybody’s favorite pastime, and New Mexico is the perfect place to hike. Not only are we blessed with mountains, but there are PLENTY of trails for people who feel like going on an adventure with their friends. Whether it’s White Wash, La Luz, or the Academy trail, there are tons of places you can spend a Saturday hiking.

In New Mexico, we have stunning sunsets, and now that the weather is warming up, Saturday hikes make a perfect date! Hiking allows you time to think about things, relieve stress, and enjoy some peace and quiet. You don’t need a lot of equipment either! All you really need are some workout clothes, tennis shoes, and water. Even if you aren’t very active, you can set your pace slow and just take your time. Hiking is the perfect solution if you want to spend some quality bonding time with friends or family.

“My family is really into that kind of stuff, so I’ve been doing it since I was little,” said sophomore Caroline Heitman, who loves to go on hikes and backpack. “I guess it’s just such a sick experience and a great way to escape your problems, and nature is really pretty!”

Caroline has hiked many national parks and trails including Grand Teton and Yellowstone, Arches, Rocky Mountain, and the Cascade Head trail. Heitman said, “When you’re in nature, you’re not stressing. Nature makes everything else seem irrelevant and small, and that’s sick.”

Me and my good friends always find a trail to hike on the Sandia mountain. It is fun yet provides an exercise, plus is a new way to hang out without doing something boring like a movie or eating. It is a healthy way to have fun and I hope to do a lot more hiking as the summer comes around.
