Presidential Candidates’ Positions on Same-sex Marriage

Keith Bova | NEWS

Republicans:

Both Donald Trump and Dr. Ben Carson do not suggest an outright ban on gay marriage, but believe that the constitution establishes the legislation as states’ rights. Carson believes that being gay is a choice, and Donald Trump opposes providing benefits for homosexual couples. Carly Fiorina takes a more extreme approach and believes that homosexuality should not occur whatsoever. Fiorina supports amendments that prevent the marriage of gay couples.

Democrats:

Hillary Clinton would agree with Donald Trump and Dr. Carson that states should establish their own laws regarding gay marriage. However, unlike Trump, Clinton would argue that homosexuals deserve domestic partnership benefits.  Bernie Sanders wants to particularly prohibit their employment discrimination. Both democratic candidates believe homosexual couples are entitled to the exact same liberties as heterosexual couples.

Although county governments issue marriage licenses, some Federal benefits are affected by marital status, including Social Security payments to surviving spouses, COBRA healthcare benefits, and immigration declarations.
