The Debate Update

MARSHALL MA | CORRESPONDENT

La Cueva’s debate team held their second official practice last night. We saw very high productivity and a virtual 100% member return rate. We also added many new members as well.

The team is growing rapidly and fosters an unprecedented number of aspiring debaters this year. The team now has nearly 80 members, making it one of the largest activity programs in the entire school and numbers are still growing.

But what has warranted this growth?

Susan Schripsema, La Cueva’s debate coach, accredits this year’s growth to “awesome captains and recruiters.” Alex Heitt, a member who is returning after a year off, owes his re-recruitment to the captains of the team as well.

Sounds like competent captains make for a competent team. This is especially apparent in the team’s previously mentioned high productivity levels. Varsity members are currently preparing to compete at the Los Alamos tournament on the 25th of this month. Novices are on track to be fully ready to debate a scrimmage on the 19th.

Both in size and productivity, La Cueva Speech and Debate is more powerful than ever.

I am a novice on the Speech and Debate team, and I can surely say that this team has immense power. The captains are interactive and involved, the other team members are eager and helpful. Other novices, like myself, are ready to learn more about what we can do and improve on. My partner and I, like many other duos, are excited and getting ready for our next event.
